Hiring a plumber
Plumbing problems often feel urgent, which is when people overpay. Knowing how plumbers price their work helps even when you can't wait.
What to know
- How pricing works
- Some plumbers charge hourly plus parts; others use flat-rate pricing per job. Many charge a trip or diagnostic fee. Ask before they come.
- Emergency rates
- Nights and weekends often cost more. If you can stop the water at the main shutoff, waiting for regular hours may save money.
- Licensing
- Many states and cities license plumbers. Check before work on water heaters, gas lines or sewer lines.
- Permits
- Water heater replacement, gas work and major repiping often need permits.
- Big diagnoses
- For sewer line replacement or slab leaks, ask for camera footage or test results and consider a second opinion.
Questions to ask the contractor
- Do you charge a trip or diagnostic fee, and is it applied to the repair?
- Is your price flat-rate or hourly?
- Can you show me the problem, or the camera footage?
