How to read the results
- Deposit: large up-front payments are a common red flag. Some states limit them; California, for example, generally caps home improvement down payments at 10% or $1,000, whichever is less. See deposits and payment schedules.
- Price compared with the others: a quote far below the rest often leaves something out. Check the unticked items before choosing on price.
- Missing items: ask the contractor to add them in writing, then compare again.
