Hiring for HVAC service or replacement

Heating and cooling quotes are hard to compare because equipment, efficiency and installation quality all vary. A few questions make the difference clear.

What to know

Sizing matters
A properly sized system is based on a load calculation for your home (often called a Manual J), not just the size of the old unit.
Compare equipment fairly
Quotes should list brand, model numbers and efficiency ratings (such as SEER2 for cooling). Look up the model numbers.
Installation details
Ductwork changes, thermostat, permits, refrigerant line sets and removal of old equipment should be listed.
Refrigerant work
Technicians handling refrigerant must be EPA Section 608 certified.
Maintenance plans
A yearly service plan can be worth it, but read what it includes and whether it auto-renews.

Questions to ask the contractor

  • Did you do a load calculation to size this system?
  • What are the exact model numbers and efficiency ratings?
  • Are rebates or tax credits available, and will you help with the paperwork?
