Hi there,
Water heaters tend to fail at the worst moment, which is exactly when people sign the first quote they get. Even in a hurry, three lines on the quote are worth checking.
1. The permit
Many cities require a permit to replace a water heater. Ask whether the price includes it and who schedules the inspection.
2. Code upgrades
Local codes may require parts the old heater didn't have, like an expansion tank, seismic straps or new venting. A quote that leaves them out can grow on installation day.
3. Haul-away and the warranty
Check that removal of the old tank is included, and ask for the labor warranty in writing. The tank warranty comes from the manufacturer; the labor warranty comes from the installer.
The question to ask
"Does this price include the permit, any code-required parts and haul-away of the old unit, and what is your labor warranty?"
