Hiring a tree service
Tree work is dangerous and can damage homes and power lines. Insurance and experience matter more here than almost anywhere else.
What to know
- Insurance is essential
- Ask for both liability and workers' compensation certificates sent from the insurer.
- Certified arborists
- ISA Certified Arborists have passed a professional exam on tree care. Look one up on the ISA website.
- Avoid topping
- Cutting the tops off trees ("topping") weakens and harms them. Good pruning removes selected branches.
- Stump and debris
- Quotes should say whether stump grinding, wood removal and cleanup are included.
- Power lines
- Trees near power lines usually need the utility or a line-clearance qualified crew. Call your utility first.
Questions to ask the contractor
- Is there a certified arborist on your team?
- What equipment will be on my lawn, and how will you protect it?
- Is stump grinding and full cleanup included?
Where to check
- ISA arborist search
- Find certified arborists at treesaregood.org.
